Highlights

  • Sighnaghi: a small town on a ridge, ringed by 18th-century walls and towers, with views across the valley to the Caucasus on clear days
  • Bodbe Monastery: just outside Sighnaghi, where St Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia, is buried
  • The Alazani Valley: vineyards and villages spread across a wide, flat valley below the mountains

Is this a wine tour?

Not unless your quote says so. Kakheti is wine country, and Georgia’s way of making wine in buried clay jars called qvevri is on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. But this is a private day trip by car: tastings, cellar visits and meals are separate unless a specific winery visit is written into your itinerary.

If you would like to visit a winery, tell us and we will plan the stop. Any tasting is paid at the winery. If anyone in the group will be drinking, the car means nobody has to drive.

Getting from Tbilisi to Sighnaghi and Kakheti

Sighnaghi is roughly 110 kilometres east of Tbilisi. Minibuses leave from Samgori station and take about two hours, but they only connect the towns: Bodbe, the valley viewpoints and any winery are up to you to reach. By private car the day links them in one loop and brings you back to your hotel. See all our day trips from Tbilisi.

The day, step by step

A typical day looks like this. The exact order and timing are agreed with you.

  • Morning Pickup in Tbilisi and the drive east.
  • Bodbe Monastery The monastery grounds and the view over the valley.
  • Sighnaghi Time to walk the old town and the walls, and to have lunch.
  • Afternoon Alazani Valley stops on the way back, as agreed.
  • Evening Return to Tbilisi.

Who it suits

Kakheti is gentler than the mountains: shorter climbs, more time in towns and plenty of places to sit down. Sighnaghi has cobbled, sloping streets, so comfortable shoes help.

Combining several regions? See the Kazbegi tour for the mountains, or book a private driver and plan your own route.

Driver or guide: what you get

Your driver speaks English, drives, waits and helps with the logistics of the day. A guide explains the history and leads you around the sites. They are different jobs, and the driver is not automatically a guide.

If you would like a guide as well, ask when you request a quote and we will arrange one for your date.

Kakheti tour questions

Can I choose the places we visit?

Yes. Tell us what interests you: monasteries, small towns, markets or a winery. The confirmed route and timing are in your quote.

Is it worth going in winter?

The vineyards are bare in winter, but Sighnaghi and Bodbe are open all year, and the views of the snow-covered Caucasus can be clearer on cold days.

Can children come?

Yes. Tell us their ages so we can plan the pace and a child seat if available.
